LMS Students Serve Community, Celebrate Earth Day

Lakewood Middle School students took learning beyond the classroom walls during the 16th Annual Earth Day Clean Up, as 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade science classes joined forces to make a visible difference in their community.

Throughout the day, students spread out across the school grounds, Lakewood Park, and the nearby Lakewood trails with gloves (THANK YOU PTO!), trash bags, and a shared sense of purpose. What started as a science lesson on environmental stewardship quickly turned into hands-on action, as students worked together to remove litter and improve the spaces they use every day.

Science teachers organized the event as part of their Earth Day activities, connecting classroom concepts like ecosystems, human impact, and conservation to real-world experiences. Students were able to see firsthand how pollution affects local environments—and how small actions can lead to meaningful change.

Groups of students collected everything from plastic bottles and food wrappers to larger debris, including items hidden along fence lines and in wooded areas. By the end of the clean-up, piles of filled trash bags served as a powerful visual reminder of both the problem and the progress made in just a few hours.

Beyond the environmental impact, the event highlighted teamwork, responsibility, and pride in the community. Students supported one another, problem-solved together, and took ownership of their surroundings.

The 16th Annual Earth Day Clean Up continues to be a valued tradition at Lakewood, showing students that science isn’t just something you study—it’s something you live.
